Fibre upgrade

Before placing your fibre upgrade order, there are a few important things to consider to help ensure a smooth process.

If you're renting, you'll need approval from your landlord or property manager. Fibre upgrades often involve drilling or cabling, so having permission upfront helps avoid delays.

Physical work including drilling may be required. To install your new internal / external NBN devices, physical drilling may be required at the property. This may not be required if you have already installed an internal conduit.

Your modem location may need to change. The nbn® equipment will be installed in a suitable spot inside your home, which could mean relocating your modem. The nbn technician will discuss this with you before proceeding.

An adult (18+) must be home during installation. The visit usually takes 3–4 hours, and the technician will need access to both inside and outside your property.

For more information on the upgrade process, check out nbn’s full guide to the installation process here.

The time it takes to complete your Fibre upgrade depends on your current nbn® technology type.

If your modem plugs directly into a phone socket, you're likely a Fibre to the Node (FTTN) customer.

If it connects to a white nbn connection box, you're likely using Fibre to the Curb (FTTC).

For Fibre to the Node upgrades, the process typically takes up to 5 business days from when your order is submitted.

For Fibre to the Curb upgrades, it usually takes 4 to 15 business days to complete. Some FTTC upgrades may still involve a pre-installation visit before the main appointment.

If the technician is unable to complete the upgrade during the first visit, a follow-up appointment will be booked to finalise the work as soon as possible.

We will do our best to get your upgrade completed quickly, and you’ll receive SMS and email updates throughout the process.

Once you’ve placed your fibre upgrade order, an nbn® technician will attend your premises to install the necessary equipment both inside and outside.

Our team will arrange the required appointments with an nbn-approved technician and keep you updated every step of the way.

Installation Appointment

An nbn technician will visit your premises, typically within the following timeframes:

  • Fibre to the Node (FTTN): within up to 5 business days
  • Fibre to the Curb (FTTC): within 4 to 15 business days

You, or an authorised person over the age of 18, must be home during this appointment to provide access inside and outside the property. Most installations take 3 to 4 hours.

⚠️ In some cases, your installation may be classified as complex, which means a second appointment may be required, extending the overall timeframe.

Pre-Installation Visit

For most Fibre upgrades, a pre-installation visit is no longer required. However, for some FTTC upgrades, an external assessment may still take place before the main appointment.

If this occurs, you don’t need to be home — it usually takes around an hour.

After the technician has finished installing the equipment and once we let you know the order is complete, plug your modem into the new NBN connection box (NTD) using an ethernet cable. Use the UNI-D1 port on the NTD and the WAN port on your modem.

If you have a Dodo modem, it should connect automatically. If you're using your own modem, make sure it's compatible with fibre and set to use PPPoE with your Dodo username and password.

Your old service will stay active for 10 days to give you time to switch over. After that, the old connection will be turned off. You won’t pay for both connections.

In most cases the upgrade will be completely free, but there are exceptions. The free nbn® install that comes with a Fibre Connect upgrade is a standard install. nbn will generally install the nbn connection box on the inside surface of an external wall closest to the street.

The location of the connection box can sometimes be negotiated with the nbn technician, but not always.

Power is required to run the nbn connection box. If there is no power at the location where nbn installs the connection box, you may need an electrician to run power there at your own cost.

Most customers will not need an electrician to do any work.
