We’re all spending more time at home and the internet has never been more important. It’s helping us connect with our loved ones, to work from home and to keep us entertained. Here are some tips on how to get most out of your internet connection.
Spending more time at home means using more internet. So we thought we’d share our tips and tricks to help you maximise your internet connection. This way you can spend less time refreshing, and more time browsing and streaming.
1. Location matters!
Put your modem in the centre of the house, that way every corner of the house should get a good signal, and no one gets left out. Avoid putting the modem by walls or other barriers, as they can block the signal.
2.Reduce your devices
Do you live with family or housemates? You might notice slower speeds with multiple devices connected to the same Wi-Fi. Having fewer devices connected at the same time can significantly improve your internet connection.

3.Disable background apps and programs
It sounds simple enough, but many of us don’t realise how much this can affect our internet speed. Close or remove any apps or programs that you’re not using from your devices.
4.Turn it off and on again
The old turn off and on trick. Sometimes your modem just needs a break. Give it around 10 minutes to relax, then turn it back on and see if this helps. This can make a big difference.
5.Maximise your video streaming
There’s nothing worse than waiting for Netflix to load when you are part way through binge watching a TV series or a movie with your family.
Here’s a few things you can try to improve your video quality:
- Disconnect other devices from your network
- Use an Ethernet cable for a more direct connection
- Close your browsers
Did you know that some common household objects and materials can interfere with your Wi-Fi?
Do you have your modem near a microwave, a fridge or a telephone? This will affect your Wi-Fi signal. Even if the device isn’t wireless, they may be working on the same frequencies, which can disrupt your Wi-Fi signal.
Materials like wood and glass shouldn’t affect the Wi-Fi signal, but brick, concrete or metal can block the signal from reaching your devices. So, make sure your modem isn’t near any of these objects:
- Home phone
- Fish tank
- Baby monitors
7. Connect to your Wi-Fi
You might find that more time at home means more time to scroll and your mobile data is running low. Popular social media apps such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube/Netflix and Music are known to use a lot of data.
Check the mobile data settings on your phone and switch Low Data Mode ‘on’ for iPhone or Data Saver mode on for Android. This pauses automatic updates and background tasks that use your mobile data.
8. Use Apps to stay connected
Just because you are staying in, doesn’t mean you can‘t stay connected with your family and friends. There are plenty of apps out there you can take advantage of. We suggest organising daily or weekly calls with your loved ones, using Zoom, Skype or other video apps. It’s so important to stay in touch, especially in times like these.
