UK/Eastbourne Kultur- und Studienreise 1997

United Kingdom/Eastbourne Culture and study trip 1997

Oh dear, this has been a long time ago. Anyway, it is still worth telling ;) As a young teenager I traveled twice to Eastbourne. Why Eastbourne? Well, good question. Mainly because I wanted to improve my English and as my brother went on this language holiday I for whatever reason went there as well. We traveled with Jürgen Matthes, which is a German tour operator for language holidays to Britain.

Jürgen Mattes
The organisation of the tour operator was quite alright. What I do remember very well is, that we were all well equipped by Jürgen Matthes yellow giveaways; as the company colour is yellow. So all Jürgen Matthes „kids“ had yellow school equipment (ruler, writing pads, pencils...) and we even had yellow shirts and caps. So often Eastbourne was full of Jürgen Matthes students. However, you also could recognize students from EF or other youth operators due to their cloths. When I think back, it is really horrible, however, at that time it was cool ;) I even liked it as much that I return the year after together with a friend.

The reason for that probably was rather good organisation and the fun I had. Even though I had English classes from Monday to Friday, I really enjoyed my holidays in Eastbourne. On the one had, it was my first trip “far away” from home and on the other, we had many parties, great excursions, nice and young teachers and a nice host family. The latter is always very important for a good language holiday.

Host family
My host family was a old couple who were very British. They lived a typical British one-family house and were very “lovely”. No, really nice but for them everything was lovely (as I said - an old typical British couple). But they were even that nice, that I return to their house in my second year with Jürgen Matthes. I remember that they took me and my friend on a sailing trip. That was great! Besides that I remember eating spaghetti on toast for lunch and very raw sausages :)

Fun
Why was it so much fun? Well, we had great parties in a disco at the pear, long nights at the beaches, young and cool teachers and tutors/organisators. And also I was in the ages, where just everything was completely funny ;)

Plane or Ship
I (or my parents) decided to go their by ship. It probably was cheaper but I am sure it also was more fun :) We had great nights dancing or just sitting in front of the elevator (for what ever reason)

Eastbourne
Eastbourne itself is not the most beautiful place in the world, but for England it already is quite nice :) I can only recommend it for teenagers who are the first time outside their home country and want to learn English.

What I didn't like very much is that there are no sandy beaches but only stone beaches. Definitely worth a visit is Beachy Head. It is a chalk sea cliff (the highest in Britain, 162 meters). You have a great view from the Beachy Head! Also really nice and very typical for a town on the British coast is the pear.
