United States/Martha's Vineyard 2005
Some people try to argue that Nantucket is better than Martha's Vineyard. This isn't true. Don't believe these people. I personally, have never been to Nantucket, but I have spent enough time on the Vineyard to know that it's better.
If you're in the Northeast (NYC - NE area), during the summer time, head to Wood's Hole, Massachusetts, and jump on a Steamship Ferry. The ferry ride takes about 45 minutes, and you'll wind up in either Vineyard Haven or Oaks Bluff. From there, you can walk around the downtown and then take taxi's to the other towns.
The Vineyard makes for a nice day trip, but I would certainly recommend you spend more time there. A weekend isn't bad, a week is better. There's actually a lot of stuff to do on the island, and it's a lot bigger than most people assume.
If you can, rent a beach house in either Oaks Bluff or Katama for a week. If you have some serious cash, you can look for something a bit more secluded "up island" (Chillmark, Menemsha area). Even if you can't get a house 'up island,' make sure, you at least take a ride up there and check it out. The country roads are like something right off a postcard and the beaches are amazing. Menemsha has amazing lobster rolls as well. Not to mention, several scenes from Jaws, the original, were filmed up there (the whole movie was shot on the island at various locations).
After you've made it around the island and checked everything out, spend your next day on the beach. Go to Katama if you want to check out girls and be with a lot of people. This beach is really popular and makes for a more relaxing experience around, or after, sunset. If you want something less crowded, head 'up island.'
For dining, drinking and socializing, there are really only two options. Either you go to Oaks Bluff or Edgartown. Both places shut down at one (yes, it's not cool) but MV is all about the after party. I mean, if you're renting a house... why not?
Anyway, Oaks Bluffs has a lot more options for bars but Edgartown is a bit more upscale. Both worth checking out.
As for food: make sure you go to The Net Result, in Vineyard Haven. It's not the fanciest restaurant on the island (not even close, it's actually just a fish market, with take away food, and pick nick tables outside) but it is amazing. They have the freshest seafood you will probably ever eat and the on site sushi chef is the man.
If you have a little bit of cash, go to Jimmy Seas, in Oak Bluffs, or The Newes, in Edgartown.
Last but not least, go to the Art Cliff, in Vineyard Haven, for breakfast. Place is absolutely amazing.
If you want to get beer or alcohol, you have to go to a Package Store (commonly referred to by locals as Packies).
