Socialist Republic of Vietnam/Hanoi Camping and Backpacking 2008
We have just spent 3 days in Vietnam. The city is absolutely crazy! The traffic is what impressed me the most. Hanoi counts roughly 2 million motorbikes and the streets are full of them! And when I write full I really mean it!
What I liked about Hanoi:
- the street markets (you should definitely spend an hour or two to slender up and down one of them and enjoy the variety of fruits, vegetables, meat and animals sold)
- the food is really great
What I didn't like about Hanoi:
- the way foreigners are treated. As a tourist in Hanoi (and vietnam) everybody charges you at least twice the price. You have to count the change if you buy something since they try to cheat on that, too. Always negotiate the price for anything in advance. I alread wrote about the airport taxi scam.
Things you should definitely do in Hanoi:
- take a motorbike during rush hour and ask the driver to drive through "Old Quarter" - the center of the city - for a while.
- cross an overcrowded street. It's scary at first but everybody looks out for everyone so there will always be space for you to sneak through and get to the other side.
