Socialist Republic of Vietnam/Hanoi Camping and Backpacking 2008
We just arrived in Hanoi today. Singapore Airlines was a great airline to fly with. Everything went nice and smoothly. We flew from Frankfurt to Singapore and after a 3 hours to Hanoi.
Our first impressions of Hanoi were quite interesting. Taxi drivers ran up to us and tried to make us take their taxies. We read about the taxi mafia on the flight - and it's true. They trz to drop you off at placed they cooperate with that attempt to rip tourist of. The taxi driver seemed not to speak a single word of english. He tried to drop us of at three different locations (where friends of him tried to talk us out of the car and into their hotel). After the third attempt to make us stay in one of their hotels, we made him understand that he will be in trouble if he doesn't drop us of the hotel we wanted to go to.
He immediately spoke pretty good english and apollogized about 10 times. We arrived at our hotel 5 minutes later...
So if you ever come to Hanoi - make sure you don't get out of the cab anywhere else than you want to.
Now we are sitting in Old Quarter in a really nice restaurant and had our first "real vietnamese" meal. Very tasty...
