Real Art

UK/London Single trip 2004

To quote a friend I met in Lisbon, “London isn't expensive, it's something else.” Of course, there are tons of places to drop pounds and pence in this mecca of Western culture. But, if you want to check out a museum that is well worth the price of admission, go to the Saatchi Gallery. Contemporary art that is nothing short of amazing, there are several words to describe the art you'll find in this joint. Visceral, grotesque, insightful, unbelievable, appalling, inventive, disgusting, confrontational, but never cliché. The exhibits change every season, so I cannot comment on what may be showed today or next week, but I can offer three displays I did see. 1) a full size tiger shark preserved in a Plexiglas coffin of formaldehyde, 2) cross section of the bedroom of an artist, and all the personal affects you'd possibly expect to find, 3) an entire room full of recycled motor oil designed to reflect symmetrically upon itself in the black shine. You won't find “Fine Art” here... just go, you'll thank yourself later.
