Sightseeing in the USA

History and Government Sights

America has a unique history because it was founded by immigrants who were sick of their government's abuses of power, so they decided to start their own country. To experience some of this history you should start out on the East Coast. You will find many sights explaining where and how the Revolutionary war was fought. There are several villages that imitate life during colonial times where you can experience a day in the life of a colonist. On the other hand, in the South visitors can see reenactments of the Civil War from when the South tried to secede from the Union over the issue of slavery.

One of the most popular historical sights in the US is the Statue of Liberty in New York City. The statue was given to the US by the French in 1886 to demonstrate their international friendship. Today it is a symbol of freedom and opportunity for all people.

Another must see for history buffs is the nation's capital Washington D.C. in the District of Columbia. There you can see the inner workings of the US government at the White House. Also, visiting the World War II and Vietnam War memorials is another interesting way to learn about the history of the USA.

In the Midwest you can see the busts of former Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln at Mount Rushmore in Keystone, South Dakota, as a tribute to their leadership and American values.

Americans have a very laid back and relaxed culture. Formality does not exist in everyday life.

Americans take their cars everywhere. There tend to be long distances between cities and towns, and the public transportation systems in the US are not nearly as efficient as they are in Europe. Most food portions you get at restaurants in the US are bigger than you would get anywhere else and grocery stores are much bigger.

Things to know

Americans like to have fun, and they can be loud sometimes. Be sure to join in on the fun of telling jokes or going to a party. Remember though, you have to be 21 to drink alcohol. Don't forget to tip your waiter 15% at a sit-down restaurant for good service, and if you like to smoke there are designated areas in most restaurants and public spaces. Many of the big cities in the US are filled with wonderful attractions and a great nightlife. Remember to always carry your money and passport with you in a safe place.

There are tons of possibilities for great road trips in the US so before you go make sure you have a valid Driver's License and know the rules of the road. Most highway speed limits are set at 70 miles per hour. If you like to go camping, there are many spots along the highway. Remember to bring insect repellent and watch out for Poison Oak and Poison Ivy.

Conclusion

There is something for everyone in the United States, whether you are young or old, an athlete or a museum buff, a party goer or a fan of the theater. Each area has something unique to offer. If you take one trip in America, it is like visiting several different countries at once. The adventure is there and waiting for you. All you have to do is decide how and when you want it to happen.
